Analysis of a similar opening

ANALYSIS OF SIMILAR OPENING

The opening scene of Twilight takes place deep in the middle of a forest. This leaves audience wandering what is happening. The trees are very close together. This creates a very claustrophobic environment and plants the concept of fear in the minds of the audience members.

The only thing that can be seen in forest is a dear. The dear is calmly eating food, minding its own business. The audience in the cinema would most likely be eating food as well. The dear is completely oblivious to what’s about to happen. The audience are oblivious as well.

The camera shifts to the point-of-view an unknown being. We cannot be sure what this thing is. The figure runs towards the dear. The dear is alerted to the figures presence and runs away. The editing from this point is very fast-paced, cutting from different angles and positions. This is used to create an adrenaline rush inside the audience members.

And just as the audience think the dear has escaped, it is suddenly grabbed by a mysterious figure.

This is similar to our opening because the first part of our opening begins with a teenager walking down the streets minding his business.
He is unaware of the danger that awaits him (so is the audience).
He suddenly senses danger, just like the dear, tries to escape and is captured.

Analysis of a similar film

ANALYSIS OF A SIMILAR FILM

I have analysed the first fifteen minutes of a similar film. Film I have chosen is Taken, which starred Liam Neeson.

I have chosen Taken because its synopsis is similar to ours in that it is about a man who is trying to rescue his kidnapped daughter.
The first fifteen minutes of the film centres around introducing the main character, Bryan Mills. The people behind the film make it clear that Bryan is a lonely, depressed man. We are also introduced to his daughter, Kim, and his ex-wife, Lenore, who is married to a rich man named Stuart.

We find out that Bryan is an ex-special forces operative. His commitment to his job is what cost him his marriage. Bryan is desperately trying to regain the affections of daughter and wants to have a real father-daughter relationship with her. He is seen talking about his daughter with buddies during a card game and explains his wanting to spend more time with her.

Bryan goes to Kim’s sixteenth birthday party. Lenore, his ex-wife, immediately takes a dislike to him showing up. Bryan knows that his daughter wants to be a singer, so he’s bought her an expensive karaoke machine for her birthday, in order to prove to her how much he loves her. Kim is excited about her present and thanks her father for it.

Bryan is hopeful that this will help bring them closer together. But, unfortunately, his hopes are shattered when Kim’s step-father, Stuart, gives her a horse as a present. Bryan’s depression grows even more. He now realises that his greatest fear is losing his daughter. This foreshadows the films main story.

The music used in the first fifteen minutes of the film is soft piano music. This represents Bryan’s depression. The most notable moment when this music is used is when Bryan’s sees his daughter riding the horse that her step-father bought her.

Being Human

Being Human is a British supernatural drama series. It revolves mainly around three characters who are secretly supernatural creatures - a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire. The main plot is that these three people/creatures are trying to have normal lives. In other words, they are trying to be human.

This relates to our film because our main protagonist, Gabriel, has abandoned his vampire clan and is now trying to live a normal human life.

Here is a link to Being Human Wiki:

http://beinghuman.wikia.com/wiki/Being_Human_Wiki

Supernatural

Supernatural is an American television series which started in 2005 and is currently airing its seventh season. As the title would suggest, this show revolves around several supernatural elements, including vampires, which feature in our film.

For this project, we had to come up with a story that follows from the first two minutes. An important part of our story is how the main protagonist Gabriel has abandoned his vampire ways in favour of starting a family.

Supernatural is well known for dealing with the issues of family. Such as sticking together and being their for each other.

Here is a link to Supernatural Wikia. Everything you need to know about the show is on here:

Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows was a popular soap opera that aired between June 1966 to April 1971.
like our film, Dark Shadows dealt with vampires and various other supernatural elements. Dark Shadows was famous for its use of unexpected plot twists and mysteries.

In our film, we have decided to use some plot twists and mysteries in order to keep the audience interested.

Dark Shadows has been made into a feature film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. The film is due to be released in May 2012. Here is a trailer for the film:

Risk Assessment - Location Three

RISK ASSESSMENT - LOCATION THREE

Location three is an narrow alleyway that connects Church Street to Church Lane. This is where we are going to film the final scene of our two minute opening.

The biggest risk that I can see is the possibility of rain. This scene, like the other two, is an outdoor scene. So there’s always a chance of rain. Other than that, I can’t see any serious risks about this location.

Risk Assessment - Location Two

RISK ASSESSMENT - LOCATION TWO

Location two is the St Mary’s Church, which is located on Church Street. We are not going to be filming inside the church, rather outside the church.

The risks of filming outdoors involves the possibility of rain. The cameras that we are using aren’t waterproof. If it rains, the cameras will be ruined. So it is important that we keep an eye on the weather before decide to film.

Having studied the area surrounding the church, I have noticed a couple of risks. One of them is that there are a lot of sticks, twigs and branches on the ground. In our two minute opening, a character has to lie on the ground.
That means that we will have to remove some of the branches from the area.

Another risk is that the grass might be wet and muddy. It is not exactly nice having to lie in wet grass. The path around the church is made up of concrete tiles. There is the possibility of tripping over hurting yourself.

Risk Assessment - Location One

RISK ASSESSMENT - LOCATION ONE

Location one is the street where the Barnsley College Eastgate building is located. This location will be used to shoot the first scene of our two minute opening.

One of the biggest risks that I can see with this street is cars. I have noticed that cars have tendency to speed down this street at quickly. If we are not careful, we could run risk of been hit by a car. The obvious way to avoid this is to not film in the middle of the road.

Another a risk (a less-likely one) is other people. By this I mean, sometimes, people, particularly young people, when they see a group of people with a camera, tend act stupid. For example, jumping up and down, waving their arms at the camera.

Other Ideas

OTHER IDEAS

Despite the fact the my original idea was dismissed, we all agreed on the idea of two people meeting up and things going wrong.

One idea that we thought about was that a depressed man would hire an assassin to kill him, however he would later change his mind, but unfortunately, the assassin continues to obey his contract and attempts to kill the man.

Very early on at the beginning of the project, I thought about making a comedy opening. I decided not to do this when I was told that comedy openings were difficult to make.

My Original Idea

MY ORIGINAL IDEA

When we first started this project, I came up with an idea for a gangster film.

The story would depict a gangster/hitman meeting someone credited as “The Contact” (gender was irrelevant) who would supply him with a pistol and tell him that the person he has to kill will be waiting for him under the belief that it is a simple meeting.

After the contact leaves, the hitman narrates how his father was a hitman just like him and how his father had one rule - always trust your gut.

The hitman walks to his meeting place which was intended to be either a restaurant, a club or a cafeteria. Inside, he meets his target, who is a member of a rival gang.

The hitman and the target sit down at a table. The conversation is friendly, at first, but soon takes violent turn as both men pull their guns out and point
them at each other. The hitman then says “Like my father always used to say, trust your gut.” It ends there.

For the rest of the story, the hitman manages to escape the target. He soon discovers that his employers have set him up and goes on a quest for revenge.

A VAMPIRE’S RETRIBUTION

EXT. STREET.

JACOB, a teenage boy wearing hooded jacket is walking down the street, minding his own business. He walks with his hands in his jacket pockets. The camera is positioned behind Jacob. A mysterious figure dressed in black runs passed the camera at a very fast pace. It is accompanied by a whooshing sound. The whooshing alerts Jacob. He turns around and looks behind him. There’s nothing there. Jacob is slightly nervous.

JACOB
Who’s there?!

Another figure dressed in black whooshes passed on the other side of the street. Jacob turns his head to where the noise came from.
Again, there’s nothing there. Jacob is now terrified. He runs down the street. He passes an alley. An arm suddenly reaches out and grabs Jacob’s jacket and pulls him in to the alley.

CUT TO BLACK

EXT. GRAVEYARD.
Jacob awakes to find himself in a derelict graveyard. He is dazed and bewildered. He looks up and sees THREE CLOAKED FIGURES standing beside him. Their leader, MARCUS, steps forward.

MARCUS
(sarcastic smile)
Hello, Jacob
Jacob shuffles back up against a tombstone.

JACOB
Who are you? Where am I?

MARCUS
Isn’t it obvious? You’re in a graveyard. Jacob quickly tries to run away. We here a whooshing sound. Marcus suddenly appears in front of him. Jacob is freaked out.

JACOB
How did you…?
(short pause)
What are you?

MARCUS
That’s not important. But what is important is the job I have for you.

JACOB
(unsure)
What job?

MARCUS
I need you to deliver a gift to an acquaintance of mine.

JACOB
Why would I do that.

MARCUS
Because if you don’t, your family will die.

JACOB
What?

MARCUS
I have people positioned outside of your house. All I have to do is say the word and they will kill family.

JACOB
Why would you want to kill my family?

MARCUS
We don’t. All you need to do is deliver £50,000 to my acquaintance. If you do that, then your will be left Unharmed. Understand? Jacob nods his head. Marcus looks at the two cloaked figures standing behind him. He stretches his hand out. Henchman 1 hands him a package. Marcus gives the package to Jacob.

MARCUS (CONT’D)
This is the package. These two will accompany you part of the way. Once the package has been delivered, your family will be left unharmed.

Jacob and the two henchmen depart. Marcus watches as they walk away. Off Marcus’ face, we fade to - -

EXT. WOODLAND AREA.
A female vampire wearing black clothes and carrying a handbag is leaning against a tree. Jacob arrives with the package. She comes off the tree. Jacob approaches her.

FEMALE VAMPIRE
Do you have the package? Jacob gives her the package. She turns her back to Jacob and looks inside the package. Jacob waits, anxiously. The vampire turns around.

FEMALE VAMPIRE (CONT’D)
It’s all here. She puts the package inside her handbag.

JACOB
Look, I’ve done what your mate asked me to do, now tell him to leave my family alone. My dad’s a cop. If you try anything, he’ll come after you.

FEMALE VAMPIRE
That’s the plan.

JACOB
What did you just say?

FEMALE VAMPIRE
How much do you know about father? Apart from him being a cop.

JACOB
Not a lot.

FEMALE VAMPIRE
There’s more to your father than believe.

JACOB
How do you mean?

FEMALE VAMPIRE
It might be better if I showed you.The vampire opens her mouth to reveal two very sharp fangs. Jacob is petrified. She walks towards him.

JACOB
What are you doing?

FEMALE VAMPIRE
Sending your father a message. She grabs Jacob’s arm and pins it up against a tree.

JACOB
(fast)
No! Wait, stop! Don’t!
(vampire bites his arm)
AAAAAGGGGHHH!!!

Nosferatu End Scene

http://youtu.be/s7ewWMc0ofs This is the final scene of Nosferatu in which he is killed by sunlight. We watch carefully at his slow, spooky movement and take note when acting ourselves. We also noticed how the young woman grabbed her breast when she saw his long fingers stretching out towards her. We also witness how the vampire dies and how he reacts to the end of his life; by covering his eyes, as sunlight hurts. Then he disappears into a bit of smoke. Scary!!

Film title - Vampire Tweed Of The Heavenly Energizer

In the fist few clips the title sequence begins, and the names of the actors fade in and out in red in the bottom, left hand corner. Then the crew names come on in the same format. The title sequence is fairly basic but it makes the film look realistic and not cheaply made, rather than having lots of fast paced animations which look very poor. The red writing represents blood which vampires need to live.

The End credits is just the title of our film: Vampire Tweed of the Heavenly Energizer which fades on screen in red in a classical style font and then fades out and ends our short film.

Location Image 2

This road will be used to film the first snatch scene of the 2 minute opening. It is a common place and doesn't look to obscure, but has an ally way for the main character to be dragged into, and the road is long and wide, therefore there's plenty of room for panning and filming long shots in detail.

Locations 1

This is a screen shot of Eastgate Church near the Old Mill Lane building.

We chose our Locations at Eastgate ally, Eastgate Church and Eastgate gardens simply because they are based around the church yard in Barnsley, which is a perfect setting for a vampire film like ours as it symbolizes death which links to the vampires in the film. Aswell as this, the 3 locations are a minimal distance from our work area in college. This is good as we can go out, film then come back in college to upload the clips with ease.

count dracula

This is Count Dracula - the most famous vampire in the history of fiction. This picture shows him being portrayed by Christopher Lee. Dracula first appeared in the 1931 film Dracula in which he was portrayed by Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi.

Dracula has had a major impact on popular culture. Numerous films have been made about him. He has also been the target of several parodies.

One of the vampires in our film is inspired by Dracula.

This is the trailer for the upcoming film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. As you can probably guess from the title, this film is about vampires. Just like our film.

A clip showing the making behind: Interview with a Vampire

This clip has inspired us to act in a serious mannor as the actors in this film were inspirational to other people around the world for their great acting skills.

A tutorial demonstrating how to make Fake Blood

This technique has inspired us to use blood effects in our film. We may use a similar formula to make fake blood for Jacob's death.

Twilight: How to achieve Vampire Make-up

The make-up shown in this clip is very interesting as the final product is very realistic, in our film we may use make-up to make the vampire characters look more 'vampire like' but the cast we have already have quite pale skin, so we might stick to no make-up depending how much time we have for our project.

A clip from the German vampire film, Nosferatu

Nosferatu was one of the first ever Vampire movies released. It includes many of the traditional aspects of a typical vampire and we used these aspects to help us illustrate our own vampire. Count Orlok wears complete black clothing and a black hat (in most scenes). Our actor to portray our vampire, Marcus, was David Sexton, who we asked to wear a black shirt, black jeans and a black trilby. During the film, Count Orlok moves very slowly and intimidating. When directing our film, we made David move slowly as well. However, because of his hat we could not see his facial expressions. Although this was accidental, we decided to keep the clips as it casts a shadow over his eyes, making him appear more mysterious. In addition to this, Count Orlok has back make-up around his eyes, and seen as David wasn't too keen on wearing my eyeshadow, we let him wear his black glasses. This along with the shadow of the hat, also compensates for the dark, sunken eye effect. To compensate for the lack of facial view, we made his script more antagonising and requested that he put on a chilling, Romanian accent, as according to the legend, Vampires originated from Romania.

psycho - shower scene

This is the famous shower scene from the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. Psycho was famous for many things. One of those things was their use of the false protagonist method.
This method involves creating a character and making the audience believe that this character is the main protagonist and then this character is removed from story (killed or simply left) revealing to the audience that this person isn't the protagonist.

In this scene, the woman who is believed by the audience to be the protagonist is suddenly murdered by the antagonist. This means that this woman isn't the protagonist.
This scene inspired me to use the same method for our two minute opening.

For our two minute opening, we have a character who the audience believes is the protagonist. At the end of the two minute opening, this character is suddenly murdered, which means that he is not the protagonist.

Twilight Saga

Twilight Saga

This is not a film of our personal choice, but nonetheless a good example of a Vampire film that we has similar elements to uor film such as the speed of the vampire's movement and the casual clothing style of the characters.

Synopsis to: Vampire Tweed and the Heavenly Energizer

Synopsis
The film begins when a teenage boy (Jacob) is walking home and dragged into an ally. When Jacob wakes up, he’s surrounded by Marcus, a 1000 year old vampire and his clan in a derelict church yard. Marcus promises to spare Jacob’s life if he carries out a task; to take a parcel of money to a rival vampire. Unaware they’re vampires, he agrees, and delivers the parcel to the vampire, who kills him.
Gabriel, a 300 year old vampire and Jacob’s father, once belonged to Marcus’ clan but didn’t want to feed off humans any more, and threatened to reveal them to humanity if they began killing conspicuously. He’s a detective and when called to the scene of a murder, he realizes it’s his son. A note in his pocket reads “Lora”, the name of his daughter. Gabriel rules it out as an animal attack. Scared and provoked, he sends his wife away to Italy where a friendly, animal eating clan of vampires live. He decides to end Marcus’ clan once and for all, and contacts many other vampires for help and to protect his home, including his half blood friend, Felix. As Lora begins to ask questions, Gabriel faces what he’s tried to avoid ever telling his children; what they are and what he is and what he’s trying to do. He tells her to stay in the house until he returns, but although his scent is all over the house, Marcus still knows Lora is there and takes her. Gabriel returns home to discover she is missing. Gabriel decides not to wait any longer and takes his army of vampires to Marcus’ underground hideout, only to find it empty. He can smell Lora’s blood in there. To find out his whereabouts, he seeks advice from an ancient vampire named Cicero, who can see into the future, and still feeds off humans but respects Gabriel for his commitment and hatred for Marcus, who, as it turns out, is trying to wipe the world of human dominance and raise as food for slaughter. He is swapping money between vampire clans so that they will join him in creating a "Heavenly Energizer" to make humans have the intelligence of mere animals.
Gabriel and his army advance to Marcus’ position in Southern France, as it turns out, arriving at an old bell tower where Marcus is stood with a frail, pale looking Lora, who is still alive but has almost been drained completely of blood. As both forces engage in war, Gabriel chases Marcus and Lora into the top of the bell tower. Marcus taunts Gabriel over Jacob’s death and reveals he had to kill Gabriel to go forward with his plans knowing he would arrive to stop him. Marcus swings open a door to a room filled with humans, dead, chained to the floor. Including his wife. Gabriel and Marcus engage in a fight and Gabriel almost finishes him. Marcus quickly picks up Lora and is about to bite her. Felix runs up the stairs and bites Marcus in the neck furiously, allowing Gabriel enough time to rip of his head. Felix assures Gabriel that all the rival vampires are dead. They take Lora to a hospital and begin a new life in France with the remaining vegetarian vampires. The hospital reveals to Gabriel that Lora has lost too much blood and is dying. His daughter’s wish is to become a real vampire so she’s with her father always. He steels a needle and injects her with vampire venom and turns her into a vampire like himself. They walk out of the hospital to join Felix in Montpellier.

Genre Research

Thrillers (Genre Research)
Thrillers are a genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as the main elements. A an example of a subgenre is a psychological thriller. They usually heavily stimulate the viewer's moods such as a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety, suspense, excitement, tension, and terror. Devices such as cliffhangers are used a lot. The cover-up of important information from the viewer, and fight and chase scenes are common methods in all thrillers, although each subgenre is independantly different.
Thrillers tend to have protagonists who are usually unaware of the antagonists' true colours.
An action thriller is a sub genre In which the hero/heroine confronts dangerous enemies, obstacles, or situations which s/he must conquer, normally in a violent or suspenseful situation. Examples include Unknown, The Adjustment Bureau, Taken, the Bourne films, etc.

Image Detail
This image taken from the recent vampire film Fright Night. Starring Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell. This image shows Colin Farrell's character revealing his inner vampire.

We have considered modelling our vampires after this grotesque look.

This film is similar to our film, because it s about vampires. The appearance of the vampires stood out for me because of their makeup and the clothes that they were wearing
