Analysis of a similar film

ANALYSIS OF A SIMILAR FILM

I have analysed the first fifteen minutes of a similar film. Film I have chosen is Taken, which starred Liam Neeson.

I have chosen Taken because its synopsis is similar to ours in that it is about a man who is trying to rescue his kidnapped daughter.
The first fifteen minutes of the film centres around introducing the main character, Bryan Mills. The people behind the film make it clear that Bryan is a lonely, depressed man. We are also introduced to his daughter, Kim, and his ex-wife, Lenore, who is married to a rich man named Stuart.

We find out that Bryan is an ex-special forces operative. His commitment to his job is what cost him his marriage. Bryan is desperately trying to regain the affections of daughter and wants to have a real father-daughter relationship with her. He is seen talking about his daughter with buddies during a card game and explains his wanting to spend more time with her.

Bryan goes to Kim’s sixteenth birthday party. Lenore, his ex-wife, immediately takes a dislike to him showing up. Bryan knows that his daughter wants to be a singer, so he’s bought her an expensive karaoke machine for her birthday, in order to prove to her how much he loves her. Kim is excited about her present and thanks her father for it.

Bryan is hopeful that this will help bring them closer together. But, unfortunately, his hopes are shattered when Kim’s step-father, Stuart, gives her a horse as a present. Bryan’s depression grows even more. He now realises that his greatest fear is losing his daughter. This foreshadows the films main story.

The music used in the first fifteen minutes of the film is soft piano music. This represents Bryan’s depression. The most notable moment when this music is used is when Bryan’s sees his daughter riding the horse that her step-father bought her.
